Best Airspace App…
Posted by mavic_leader on September 28, 2020 at 10:07 amHey everyone…
I’ve been using Airmap for a while and have been happy with the app. However, I’ve been hearing quite a few people say that we should not be using Airmap because they have an unpopular position on airspace management or something like that.
Does anyone have more detail on that? Also, what app do you guys use for flight planning/LAANC requests? (Free is better if possible
)

We at Drone Academy recommend (and use) Kittyhawk or UASidekick for our LAANC requests (when needed).
Airmap has taken some, pretty public, anti-consumer positions with regards to airspace. Essentially, they seem to be in favor of creating a ‘pay to play’ situation where drone pilots have to pay to access the national airspace.
The screenshot below is a couple of tweets (since deleted) that they put out a week or two ago showing their belief that access to the NAS could be a revenue-generating tool for governments and individuals.

I’ve been playing with Kittyhawk and have been happy so far. Seems like there are way more features in there than just LAANC (like flight logging) but I’m not using those just yet.
For now, my stack is Kittyhawk for LAANC, UAV Forecast and Windy for weather, and Skywatch for insurance.

UASidekick is cool but you have to pay $5.99/mo for the Commercial Pilot Package if you want ‘Commercial LAANC Filing.” https://uasidekick.com/pricing/
That’s not too expensive and you get some other neat tools but I prefer Kittyhawk. It’s clean, easy, and you can file LAANC requests for free.
