FAA Does a U-Turn: ‘Notice to Airmen’ is Back

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially reverted the meaning of the acronym NOTAM from “Notice to Air Missions” back to its original “Notice to Airmen.” This decision, which took effect immediately as per FAA Order 7930.2, marks a return to the longstanding terminology used in aviation safety and communication.

Why the Change?

The term “Notice to Airmen” was originally established to refer to critical information provided to pilots and aviation personnel. However, in December 2021, the FAA updated the acronym to “Notice to Air Missions” as part of a broader effort to use more inclusive language within the aviation community.

Despite this shift, the change was met with mixed reactions. Many pilots, aviation professionals, and industry organizations continued to use the original term, citing its familiarity and historical significance. The FAA has now decided to restore “Notice to Airmen”, aligning with widespread usage and industry preference.

Impact on Pilots and Aviation Personnel

For pilots, dispatchers, and air traffic controllers, this reversion does not introduce any operational changes. The NOTAM system remains unchanged, and the format and function of NOTAMs will continue as before. The primary difference is the wording used in official FAA documents and communications.

However, the FAA will gradually update publications, training materials, and directives to reflect the reinstated terminology. Aviation stakeholders should refer to the updated FAA Order 7930.2 for the latest guidelines.

FAA’s Official Statement

The FAA has issued an official notice confirming this reversion. Those seeking further details or clarification can reach out to Michael R. Beckles at Michael.R.Beckles@faa.gov.
